Your dentist, Dr. Frank Russomanno, Jr., and our dental team care about you and your smile, which is why we strongly encourage you to take the healing process seriously after you’ve had a tooth removed. If you properly heal following your oral surgery, there is a high chance you’ll have a strong and restored oral health.
To help you take advantage of the recovery process, our Amber Leaf Family Dental team encourages you to do the following things:
No. 1: Keep the bleeding down as much as possible. You can do so by placing a clean gauze pad over the affected area and applying pressure to it for a total of 45 minutes. If the bleeding doesn’t slow, repeat the process with new gauze.
No. 2: Ice outside the area to keep the swelling down. We recommend icing for 10 minutes and then taking a 20-minute break. Repeat this process as necessary.
No. 3: Take pain medications to help with the discomfort. Dentists and oral surgeons generally prescribe medications to the patients, so if that is the case for you, please take the pills as recommended. If not, you are more than welcome to take over-the-counter pain medications to help.
No. 4: Keep your diet strictly to liquids for the first 24 hours. This will help you keep the surgical area clean and safe. On the second day, keep to soft foods. It’s best to maintain a soft-foods diet for about three days after your surgery.
No. 5: Continue to brush your teeth regularly, but please avoid brushing the teeth that are neighboring the surgical area. However, after the first 24 hours, you can start brushing those teeth again—just be soft and gentle as you do so.
