Abscesses: FAQs and Figures

Posted .

Do you know anything about abscesses? Do you think you might have an abscess? Here are some FAQs and answers about your teeth:

What is an abscess?

Oral conditions like tooth decay, periodontal disease or cracked teeth can cause bacteria entering the innermost part of the tooth. Here is where the pulp resides, which is responsible for keeping the tooth alive. The infection may turn into an abscess, in which pus builds up at the root of the tooth near the jawbone and creates a sort of pocket.

What are the signs of an abscess?

The first sign, of course, is the pus-pocket itself. You may also experience oral pain and swelling, a reddening of the gums, a bad taste in your mouth, or a fever.

What is the procedure for treating an abscess?

This depends upon the extremity and cause of the infection. Dr. Frank Russomanno, Jr. may recommend antibiotics to eliminate the bacteria in your mouth. He will also almost certainly drain the pus from the area. If the reason for the infection is gum disease, he may perform a treatment like scaling and root planing to clean the area. If it’s because of a fractured tooth, you may require a root canal.
